Homemade Flour Tortillas with Butter
There’s something magical about making flour tortillas from scratch. Sure, it takes a little extra time, but the tender, buttery flavor and soft, warm texture are absolutely worth the effort. Once you try these, you’ll never want store-bought tortillas again!
Ingredients (makes ~8 tortillas)
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 12 g salt (2 teaspoons)
- 8 g baking powder (2 teaspoons)
- 84 g unsalted butter, softened (6 tablespoons)
- 360 ml warm water (approx. 1½ cups, adjust as needed)
Instructions
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Add butter: Cut in the butter with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add water: Gradually add the warm water, mixing until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not sticky.
- Knead: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3–5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Rest: Cover the dough and let it rest for 20–30 minutes to relax the gluten.
- Divide and roll: Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, then roll out into 15–20 cm circles.
- Cook: Heat a dry skillet or griddle to medium-high (≈190–200 °C / 375–400 °F). Cook each tortilla 1–2 minutes per side, until brown spots appear.
- Keep warm: Stack the tortillas and cover with a towel to keep soft and pliable.
